11/04/19: Edit Session

In the edit session with Nick and Jim I showed all the image made so far, that I would consider presenting in exhibition. While I already had an idea of how I wanted to present, it was interesting hearing what they had to say about the best way to show the work. I was surprised by the way in which they would present it. I had thought about showing one photograph from each shoot (one face hold, one beach embrace, one chair self portrait) however both Nick and Jim did not think this was a good idea. They both thought the work had to be displayed in diptics and triptics as that is how they were shot. They also stated that my way of shooting ahas been very formulaic therefore showing the repeated images would be a better way to go. I am still unsure about how I feel about this, as the images would all be copies, there would be a lot of repeating and potentially this would make the work much less interesting and it would be repetitive. I appreciate this is the way in which I have shot, however the only point at which the repeated shots were relevant to the work were in the face holding and the chair portraits. I do feel as though I should show the images of the boys holding each others face as they have embodied a lot about the reasons for the work (the power dynamic between the two boys) and therefore I feel that separating them would not be a good idea.

I am also  aware that my moving image is a triptic and is presented on three screens next to one another, this, therefore, has emphasised my reluctance to include too many repeats, I feel that with the new shoots and with the beach portraits I have not only made repeats but singular interesting photographs, that would be effective if presented in exhibition on their own, without a repeat.

The size of the prints was also commented on, Nick and Jim both thought that the work would be best to do in a variety of sizes, emphasising different aspects of the work. However, I don’t like the idea of doing this, as I don’t think there are any pieces that are more important than others. I feel that the work is an exploration, and in ways, wont be resolved, therefore there is not a particular set, or photograph that is stronger or needs to be larger than any others. I feel that this would confuse the work in exhibition.
