For this shoot I was exploring my brothers and their relationship with each other. This work was made at the beginning of ESP1 and I am using it as the starting point of my ESP2. I have looked at the work of Rineke Dijkstra and her portraits on the beach. I grew up in Brighton therefore have a strong connection to the beach therefore used this as the setting for the shoot. I wanted to photograph my brothers embracing to embody how they have recently built a relationship after years of not getting along. I photographed them in the water so that the waves crashed around them and they needed to hold onto each other for support to stay up against the water, which I feel represents their relationship in their personal lives. I would like to repeat this shoot, or explore something with a similar theme, perhaps with moving image to actually capture the movement of the water and the power of it as the boys struggle to stay standing.
I will also look into the technical side of the work as I would like to shoot on medium format film as well as moving image. I think that I would like to light the images differently too, perhaps shooting at night with flood lighting to bring the boys out from the back ground. I love the lighting in Rineke Dijkstra’s beach portraits so will use that as an inspiration. I would also potentially like to work with a spot light, perhaps having the boys walk into the light, embrace, then leave the light, leaving just the moving water and the diegetic sounds.
If I am to make a moving image piece it may be interesting to include some portraits too, to give the audience context as to who is involved, and that they are brothers.
