I have been so interested by the power dynamic that has been highlighted by Jim, Nick, Shawn and Maja Daniels, as well as words such as ‘uncomfortable, oppressive, unhealthy and unsettling’ used by Joanna Piotrowska. I have spoken to them all about the way in which the power dynamic changes when my brothers and I make these photographs. They do what they are told in front of the camera, which is something I have never experienced with them, and I am interested in how I could utilise this in the work. I have spoken about how far I could push them in the shoots to really push this different power dynamic. This would be shot in the same way as the other photographs, perhaps in a different location, perhaps outside so they feel even more exposed.
Things that I could try and make them do:
- Wear women’s clothing.
- Wear make up.
- Naked (I don’t really want to do this).
- Hold hands (too romantic?).
- Stare at each other.
- Stare at me.
- Resting their head on each other (from behind).
- Having me stand taller than them.
- Me sitting on them, using them as furniture?
- Leaning on them.
- Wear women’s clothing while holding hands.
- Wear women’s clothing while hugging.
- Wearing loads of jewellery.
- Naked but wearing a feminine blanket or shawl over themselves (like an ancient greek women).
- Paint their nails or put clips in their hair.
- Wigs?
- Weird hats?
- Piggy back.
- Shoulder ride.
Clothing Inspiration (Pixie Liao: Experimental Relationship, Portrait of her Boyfriend):

While this image is actually empowering and he looks beautiful and confidant, I don’t want them to look like this in the photograph but the clothing was an interesting idea inspired by this photograph. I almost want them to look uncomfortable, as if they are being forced to do something, I feel that this will emphasise the way in which there has been a shift of power between us.
