- didn’t study photography, started through connections.
- went into selling stories to newspapers with war photography, selling things to different companies and got good experience in the industry. Worked with reportage photography.
- Started making his own work, went into Vogue on a freelance contracts. Met the creative director and showed the work, they didn’t like it, but they told him to go and see the editor. He remade his portfolio, showed the editor, had no fashion experience. Risk taking, it was hard and uncomfortable. He became the picture editor.
- Learnt how to communicate and organise shoots through Vogue, calling people and getting favours and building relationships with different people.
- Started off, before Vogue, working with Bizarre magazine. After selling them stories, he eventually became the picture editor.
- Worked with Jack magazine as the photo editor.
- Work in commercial ways as they are still looking editorial, as editorial does not pay very well.
- Always ask questions, don’t trust everything you hear and make sure you have all the information you need.
- When creative producing, make a list of everything that you need, help and safety and everything, food, coffee toilets etc.
- Think about each characteristic of each person when photographing them.
- Understand everything about what you’re doing, know the environment you’re going to shoot in.
- Take a long time getting to know the people, making them comfortable and working with them in a collaborative way.
- Speaks about the difficulties in the links between photography, sex and power.
- Find out who companies PR person is, subscribe to magazines you want to work with and keep up to date with their information, chance people up, be annoying.
